Barrel Shot Looking East

In the background, at the other end of the bridge, is the Burke Breise Soleil, a giant sunshade that protects the Quadracci Pavillion below. This was all designed by the internationally famous Santiago Calatrava.

Oblique View

Looking Northeast. The tower is over 200 feet tall, and carries the concept of a ship's mast, a ship being the concept of the building. In the distance, on the left, is the original art museum and war memorial.

The Deck and Cable Mounts

This unusual design places the stay cables in the center of the span.

This bridge bears some resemblance to the Calatrava designed Sundial Bridge at Turtle Creek.

Cable Mounts

The raised curb around the stay mountings was hoped to suffice to prevent accidents, but alas, several broken bones caused the addition of the stainless steel railing a few years ago.

The East End

Approaching the entrance to the Quadracci Pavillion Entrance. Stairways at the end of the bridge allow access to the ground level without entering the museum.

The Burke Breise Soleil is a kinetic structure that mimicks both the wings of a bird or the sail of a ship. It opens each morning at 10 AM and closes with the museum's closing. The wings open and close at noon as a demonstration.

The Breise Soleil is comprised of 72 fins, ranging in length from 26' to 105' and when fully opened, reaches a wingspan of 217' at its widest point, wider than the wingspan of a Boeing 747.

Barrel Shot Looking West

In the distance, on the left, the First Bank Center, on the right, Northwestern Mutual Life. Peeking up in the distance, visible just to the right of the cables, is the top of the Wisconsin Gas Company Building. At the top is a glass structure, in the shape of a flame, that predicted weather by color, and was used as a navigational landmark on Lake Michigan until it was obscured by the taller buildings surrounding it.
