The East Face

As seen from Pierce Street. The viaduct is just short of being 3/4 mile long.

Four viaducts cross the Menomonee Valley north to south at 6th Street, 16th Street, 27th Street and 35th Street. The Grand Avenue (now Wisconsin Avenue) viaduct crossed the river east-west just slightly north and west of here. Just one block north of that viaduct, a streetcar trestle, called the Wells Street Viaduct, carried street car tracks across the valley on the route to Waukesha.

The Original Government Plaque

The Mayor on this plaque is the namesake of the Hoan Bridge. The plaque is located on the east parapet wall on the south end of the viaduct.

Original Railing Sample

This is the type of railing that used to be on the viaduct. (Source: My shaky memory.) This structure is about 15 feet from the roadway (see photo #16 where you can see this fence on the right.) I do not know the original purpose of this structure, perhaps it is part of a ramp to Pierce St. that is long gone.

Center Stairs

The stairway provides access to Canal St. from the bus stops on the viaduct, at the top of these stairs. The climb is equivalent to a four or five story building, and after an 8 hour shift, who feels like climbing to a 5th floor walk-up bus stop?

An elevator was proposed for this site, but funding could not be secured and the plan was scrapped. The Milwaukee County Transit System responded by extending bus service on Canal Street.

The Girder Superstructure

As seen from the stairway.

Overspray on concrete is an indication that the viaduct has been recently refinished.

Looking East Across the Menomonee Valley

The smokestack belongs to Falk Corporation, in continuous operation here since 1850. To the right is the Mitchell Park Domes, at the end of the 27th Street Viaduct. The Hoan Bridge is about four miles east of this location.

Looking West

From the bus stop in the center of the viaduct. Miller Park is located at the end of Canal Street, not seen in this photo. The boulevard, shown here, is part of a new business park development.

The Menomonee River turns north just in front of the stadium, runs beneath the Wisconsin Avenue viaduct, then turns west in Miller Valley. (See the 45th Street Bridge for more about Miller Valley.)

Looking North

From the bus stop in the center of the viaduct. The smokestack is one of two here, they are all that is left of the huge repair shops of the old Milwaukee Road Railroad. The area is called Chimney Park.

That's Canal Street crossing under the viaduct.

The West Face

Taken from the north portal of the viaduct, where it intersects with I-94.

The area around the two smokestacks is called Chimney Park. It is the former site of the enormous repair facility of The Milwaukee Road, that employed thousands of people.
