The South Approach The building just to the right of the Hoan Bridge in the picture, is the old Wisconsin Gas Company Building. The unusual shape on the top of the building is a 21' tall light, shaped like a gas flame, that tells the weather. It went up in 1956, and a poem was issued to help people remember what the colors meant. It went something like,
When the flame is red, warm weather ahead. Well, something like that, anyway. When the flame was flashing, it meant precipitation was in the forecast. The light still operates, but since the building is surrounded by taller buildings, it is difficult to see except from places like the Hoan Bridge. You can see a close-up of the flame on the site of The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal Online. Photo taken by J.R. Manning in July 2008 |

The South Approach The bridge carries I-794 over the harbor, right along the lakefront. Just south of this location, I-794 ends and a parkway, designated Wis Highway 794, continues to the airport. Photo taken by J.R. Manning in July 2008 |
