Milwaukee's Front Door

East Elevation of the Hoan Bridge, looking west from the mouth of the Milwaukee River. Just past the bridge, the Milwaukee River turns north, the Kinnickinnick River flows to the south. The Menomonee River branches away from the Milwaukee River just to the north.

The South Approach

As seen from the docks area of Jones Island in the Milwaukee Harbor.

The building just to the right of the Hoan Bridge in the picture, is the old Wisconsin Gas Company Building. The unusual shape on the top of the building is a 21' tall light, shaped like a gas flame, that tells the weather. It went up in 1956, and a poem was issued to help people remember what the colors meant. It went something like,

When the flame is red, warm weather ahead.
When the flame is gold, it will be cold.
When the flame is blue, no change is in view.

Well, something like that, anyway. When the flame was flashing, it meant precipitation was in the forecast.

The light still operates, but since the building is surrounded by taller buildings, it is difficult to see except from places like the Hoan Bridge.

The South Approach

The bridge carries I-794 over the harbor, right along the lakefront. Just south of this location, I-794 ends and a parkway, designated Wis Highway 794, continues to the airport.
