West Elevation The Yahara River is a tributary of the Rock River that flows from a source in the north part of Dane County. It feeds the five lakes in the chain that surround Madison. The most famous of the lakes are Menona and Mendota, that are separated by the isthmus that holds the City of Madison. Lake Monona is the site of the plane crash that killed Otis Redding on December 10, 1967. Several vehicle, bicycle/pedestrian and railway bridges cross the Yahara River between Monona and Mendota.
